The Adoption and Children Act 2002 came into force in both England and Wales in December 2005. It gives adopted adults and their adult birth relatives a right to apply for access to their birth record and request an Intermediary Agency to trace and establish whether contact would be welcome with a birth relative.
We can support both parties as they get to know each other and build their relationships, if this is something that they are both interested in.
The Post Adoption Intermediary team also work with birth relatives who have lost children through adoption. If those children have reached adulthood, then the team can support birth relatives in making contact.
We also offer support and counselling to current birth parents and grandparents whose child has recently been placed for adoption. We can explain what is happening at each stage of the adoption process and can offer counselling, help and support in the form of Letterbox, Later Life Letters, Life Story Work, Grief and Loss.

You can also speak to an adoption worker for an informal chat, and we can then send you an information pack.
